Mclaren's Improved Package For Imola

Recommended Posts

McLaren's 'MP4-20' grand prix car is too 'gentle' on its tyres.

That's the admission of chairman and CEO Ron Dennis, responding to Kimi Raikkonen's warning that he won't win this year until the silver car is a better qualifier.

After Bahrain, RD vowed to speed up scheduled (for Spain) car changes (to Imola).

He said he'd ask Michelin for a 'softer' tyre, and order Woking to work on MP4-20 so that it's harder on the rubber.

''What is extremely good about Michelin,'' Ron added, ''is that they're ... prepared to develop tyres for specific teams.

''It's a very strong contrast to the other tyre manufacturer.

What is it with Mclaren they've been buggering it up for about 5 years now, winning every now and then but just not delivering a decent championship challenge!! Even in 1999 when they last won a title, things kept going wrong due to their own errors, which enabled Irvine to almost win the whole thing

Bridgestone develop all their tyres exclusively for Ferrari! You can hardly blame them though; I can

well McLaren did lose their way a bit due to their new Communications Centre and Paragon - could be the same thing, not sure though - and didn't focus on racing. Plus Ilmor suffered alot with the death of Paul Morgan.

They've always been pretty bollocks since 1991. Maybe thats an overstatement but oh well care loads

They will surprise a few people when they get a grip on the problem. Clearly they have incredible race pace once everything is underway (which is no use by then!). They just need to get things underway from up front!

the way mclaren have showed they can develop a car last year means they'll be back in no time. last year they climbed all the way from the low midfield to the front by silverstone and spa.

this year they're coming from top 3 pace. they will be a force again in no time.

they were fast and reliable in '98, and fast and unreliable in '99. M$ did pretty good to keep with Mika in '98.

No Mclaren truly do seem to be struggling, and have probably been the most dissappointing team out there as we were expecting them to challenge for race wins and challenge renault! Well hope the modifications work that they are doing for the next few races!!! Imagine renault, mclaren, toyota, williams, ferrari and now maybe bar all fighting at the top, what a season this will turn out to be if this does happen, although not for a few races yet!

No thats very right. I would actually like to see ferrari really competative and beaten in a straight fight, instead of them struggling terribly!!!

I don't remember Irvine ever keeping up with Hakkinen in 1999, he stayed in the title chase cos at Imola & Monza Mika crashed, silverstone his wheel fell off, Germany he had a tyre blowout, Nurburgring was mayhem, australia he broke down, & all kinds of other things. 2000 mclaren were better but not good enough, and since then they've been nowhere near good enough

Yes they must be hungry but perhaps they're not as well organised as ferrari, they seem to make a lot of errors. Ferrari class of the field 1999? I thought it was common knowledge at the time that the mclaren was the best car! Irvine was almost never faster than Hakkinen, but his car was a lot more reliable and he and ferrari didnt make silly mistakes. Can't really defend the fact that Mika Salo outperformed Irv in Germany though!

If M$ didn't break his leg in '99, he most likely would have won the title.
