'BAR to offer Honda engines in exchange for Jenson'

Wednesday July 13 2005

BAR will offer to supply Williams with Honda engines in exchange for retaining Jenson Button, according to reports.

The compromise would see Williams, without an engine supplier for next season after being dropped by BMW, supplied with the same engines as BAR for 2006. In return, Williams would have to relinquish their contractual rights to Button's services next season.

Considering the relative performances of both teams at present, it's a compromise that would presumably be welcomed by Jenson, too.

BAR have already spoke of their wish to reach a "behind closed doors" agreement with Williams over Jenson, with team boss Nick Fry also pointedly noting: "We have a Honda engine and we have Honda as half owners of the company and Williams don't appear to have an engine at the moment."

The value BAR are attaching to retaining Button is certainly of the eyebrow-raising variety.

thats what planetf1 thinks. I think its a loada bull as well really!

A Honda engine deal would be worth in the region of $15 million, but BAR are prepared to spend far more than that to keep hold of Jenson. On top of the costs and logistical problems of an extra engine supply, the team are also ready to offer Jenson a $50 million contract over the next five years, propelling the Englishman to the top three earners in the sport.

It's understood that Williams now have the option to take Jenson for 2006, regardless of what the driver himself wants. A deal to swap engines for the driver could appeal to Williams as, as BAR's Nick Fry points out, "we have a Honda engine and we have Honda as half owners of the company and Williams don't appear to have an engine at the moment."

When was the last time Williams had either a top class driver or a top class car?  Williams will surely want to sign the very best driver they can as it will make them more competitive, regardless of whether the car does not reflect the driver

True, but whats the point in having a great driver, and no engine, or a rubbish engine, the driver would just try to get out!

The question is: does the driver have a choice?

I can actually see such a situation arising. If so, the question is then if Williams will retain Nick or which driver they will get to replace Nick!

He has done nothing to deserve 5 million pounds, I hope Honda wakes up from their fantasy sometime soon.

5 million is peanuts in F1 (I'd reckon Jenson is already on that), now 50 million is a lot of money.

The only real fact we have is that BAR want to keep him. He's been there three years and they know him well, who can argue with them, if they believe he is worth a sizeable amount of money. They are in the best position to judge Jenson's value not us. Personally I just hope Jenson's future gets sorted out quickly.
