CdA is more important. But, yeah, it looks horrifically slow. I hope that's not representative of the car's ultimate pace.

While the first Grand Prix of the season is just a few weeks away, Super Aguri tested for the first time on Tuesday in Barcelona. Takuma Sato drove a few laps in the 2002 Arrows chassis, modified to the new regulations. The Japanese driver is realistic about his chances. "But being here today is an incredible thing," he told F1Racing.net.

"This was a fantastic moment for the whole team," he said. "Everyone in the team has worked day and night to get it all ready. The first installation lap was a very special one. We had some problems; we couldn't drive as much as we wanted. The fundament of the car is very old. We made the best of it, but have to be realistic. That we are here today is an incredible thing. Bringing the car on the grid is the first step for the team."

Sato drove the last two seasons for the competitive BAR-Honda team, but now has to start from scratch with Super Aguri. Being competitive seems to be out of the question. For Sato driving for Super Aguri is special enough, for the moment. "Of course, this is a very different approach from what I was used to at Honda. It's a brand new challenge. A driver always wants to be in a competitive car, but there are a lot of things we can develop."

While most new teams take the time to build up a successful combination, Super Aguri rushed their way into the 2006 championship. Why did the team not take a year of preparation, before entering Formula 1 in 2007? "This year is a great chance," Sato explained. "There are many changes in the regulations. Everybody thought this was a great opportunity, the best year to enter F1."

"We don't know when the new car is coming. Hopefully somewhere in the European stage of the season, but we don't know yet," Sato concluded.

The Super Aguri team made its public test debut on Tuesday morning when Takuma Sato took the SA05 for some installation laps at Barcelona.

The Japanese driver shook down the car, a modified version of the Arrows A23 raced in 2002, at the Kemble airfield in Gloucestershire last week, but today marked its first public appearance at a circuit.

Symonds: 'Watch out for Honda'

PF1

Renault technical chief Pat Symonds has tipped Jenson Button's Honda team to challenge for honours this season.

Symonds, Renault's engineering director, believes his own team and Honda are leading the way in winter testing after several weeks of intensive preparations.

Renault have two world championships to defend, while Honda are looking to finally establish themselves as a genuine force in Formula One.

Button, yet to win a race after 100 starts, and new team-mate Rubens Barrichello have set the pace in several tests so far - and Symonds believes that speed is genuine.

He said: "Certainly, the headline times produced at the end of every day probably have less relevance than anything else.

"We tend to concentrate more on the long-distance running people do, rather than the short runs.

"So far this winter, I think it appears we and Honda may have slightly the upper hand, but McLaren are certainly getting there too.

"Last week in Valencia, they produced some very good long run times and started looking competitive - and Ferrari are not far behind."

Renault and Honda are both among the Michelin contingent this season for the French company's swansong in Formula One.

Michelin have been forced out of the sport by a move to introduce a single tyre manufacturer - likely to be rivals Bridgestone - and will quit at the end of the season.

But both teams, along with fellow title hopefuls McLaren, have been reassured that move will not compromise Michelin's efforts this year.

Michelin's Formula One director Nick Shorrock said: "Everybody remains totally committed - and our advanced research team will be able to focus all its efforts on this year, rather than dividing its time between the present season and longer-term projects."

The new season starts in Bahrain on March 12.

Just to add to what Lure said regarding Rosberg, it rained mid afternoon and as Nico was practicing starts and had an engine failure as Lure said, he didn't post a time when track conditions were at their best.

Reliability problems for Super Duper Aguri, not unexpected really. They're really going to struggle to finish races at the start of the year.

Looking at the testing times for Sato, I wonder how many laps would it take the front runners to start lapping Sato (The Mobile Chicane!) Considering its a revamped 2002 car, would they create a kind of record for being overtaken the most number of times in a race?

:P:rolleyes:

Yuji Ide's turn to try the SA05

The testing day started on a wet Catalunya circuit this morning but the track gradually dried out. Because of the improving track conditions, lap times also got better towards the end of the session.

Kimi Raikkonen set the best time today, followed by the Renault drivers, Giancarlo Fisichella in second place and Fernando Alonso in third position.

Both Renault drivers were stopped on the circuit during their first lap, the R26 suffering from electrical problems. Christijan Albers and Jarno Trulli were also stopped on the track during the session.

Yuji Ide got his first experience behind the wheel of Super Aguri

Due to the bad weather and track conditions it was not possible to carry out the programme as scheduled. Therefore, the team concentrated on start practices and system checks. To take advantage of the rainy weather conditions both pilots ran wet and intermediate tyre comparisons for Michelin.

What comes next: According to the weather forecast good weather and track conditions are expected for tomorrow, which will enable the team to evaluate Michelin dry tyres. It will also focus on the assessment of aerodynamic parts. Cooling system tests are also scheduled .
