cristiano84 0 Report post Posted February 6, 2006 The legend surrounding Gilles is mainly down to his courage. It's curious to think that, would have Gilles raced today, his crash prone attitude wouldn't have guaranteed him a seat in F.1 for too long.Back in the '80s there was less pressure to perform in the short term for the drivers and many talents came out after years of racing in the grand prixes, like Niki Lauda.Imagine if BRM had dropped Lauda after few races just because he was underperforming because of his unexperience?Imagine if Ferrari had dropped Gilles after his first tragic experience with Ferrari in the last few races of 1977? Moose11 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2006 You make a good point. Maybe teams could do with being more patient with some of the rookie drivers. Given the right time some of them could blossem better than others. It seems these days right from the off you need to be next to flawless. One of my favourite moments of him was when he lost the wheel and prceeded to drive round the circuit at pretty high speeds to get back to the pits. Genius! Genius! They got away with a lot of stuff in those days that would be unacceptable these days and would result in penalties. The kid had so much fire in him and that was Enzo's cup of tea, that's what he loved to see. He went from snowmobile racing to Atlantic and straight into a ferrari. Enzo said don't worry, he'll learn to drive. Look at him go!
