Renault Look For New Sponsor

(GMM) Renault may look to China and India to replace the backing of long time title sponsor Japan Tobacco next year.

The team's president Patrick Faure admitted that the sport's - and the world's - newest markets could be the source of future budgets, particularly in the post-tobacco era.

''We are in discussion with Chinese people,'' Frenchman Faure revealed to the Reuters agency, ''you have Indians coming, you have a lot of new countries where companies are big.''

Japan Tobacco and Mild Seven's Renault exit, though, is a big hit to the championship winning team. Faure admitted that the brand is currently paying 'a good part' of the budget.

Mild Seven difficult to replace

01 February 2006

According to Renault's President Patrick Faure it won't be easy to replace the departing cigarette sponsorship from 2007 onwards. At the end of this season their main sponsor Mild Seven will pull out of Formula One after backing Benetton and Renault since 1994.

"The departure of cigarettes in 2007 is not easy to replace," Faure said. They were were really paying a good part of the budget. I don't see easily one sponsor replacing them. But I think we can find two or three smaller sponsors who can share the kind of space they have on the car."

At the moment Renault is in talks with various different companies to replace Mild Seven. "We are in discussion with Chinese people, you have Indians coming, you have a lot of new countries where companies are big," he revealed. "Basically, it's going to be very difficult to replace Mild Seven, but it's not impossible if we can show good results and accept to have two or three (sponsors) replacing one."

McLaren lost West as their sponsor in August 2005, but will see Vodafone backing the Woking-based team starting next season.
