Who's Donald Bradman and Jesse Owens?

I think Muhammad Ali would have to be placed somewhere in there. And Pele.

I would actually remove Sachin Tendulkar Lance Armstrong and put Pele and Muhammad Ali in there on second thoughts

For me, there is only one - the Louisville Lip, Muhammad Ali. Nobody else even comes close in my eyes. That's not to say I don't think there are other great sports people, but I just think he was in a different league to the rest. :D

You're kidding, right?

I'd include Joe Louis, because we're talking icons here. And by that token, Max Schmeling should be included as well (for obvious reasons). W.G.Grace is an icon in the UK, and rightly so. Muhammad Ali, of course, the world over. Is Michael Schumacher an icon? Not in the same that Ayrton Senna is, in my opinion. These people represent something more than the sport they engage in.

I think Senna is the only 'icon' of motor racing. My list, not in order:

Muhammad Ali

Ayrton Senna

Pele

Brian Lara

Wayne Gretzky

Maradona

Cant think of any more! There are lot of sporting 'legends' such as Agassi, Woods, Botham, but these are not 'icons' like the people named above

I'm sure there needs to be an NFL football player on there somewhere but don't ask me who. Bruce will know... I don't know who Brian Lara is but presumably on your side of the pond he's iconic, somehow. Wayne is a good one as are the rest of your picks actually.

Why not just start the thread in the Cafe?

Brian Lara is/was a cricketer from West Indies. He's not really iconic in UK but I think he is the worldwide 'icon' of cricket.

I dont know a single NFL player (except Dan Marino, and thats only cos he made an appearance in 'bad boys 2'!!!

Mario Andretti?

Didn't have the results I deem necessary for my list. Sure, an F1 title is great, and so is an Indianapolis 500 and Daytona 500 win, but he hasn't had the results that he should have.

Lara does definitely not qualify, there have been greater batsmen than him

Yeah there is actually a difference between "Top 10 greatest" & "Top ten icons"...

Im not sure exactly how to describe the differance, but Schumacher for example would go in the "Greatest" but not in the latter one.

I wouldnt say schumacher is an icon. An icon is someone people all over the world aspire to and look up to, and are hailed like they're some kind of god of their profession - that is senna, not schumi
