F1 Night Race

Recommended Posts

Yes but those are permanent race tracks so its alot easier to light them. Places like Albert Park on the other hand would need to lights to be installed every year which would cost alot of money.

I thought FOM had said Singapore and Malaysia were going to be tested for night racing. Aren't they permanent tracks? That's another reason they should have it at Indy. Anyway, here's a pic from last year's Grand Prix of Miami about an hour after the sun had set:

Bernie wants all races in the region to be night races. It is easy for Singapore and Malaysia as their races will be in the middle of the city with many lights already installed whereas Albert Park is just that, a park and as a result does not have lights.

Revival Time:

Italy-based lighting contractor picked for inaugural F1 Singapore GP

By Jessica Yeo, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 16 October 2007 2209 hrs

SINGAPORE : Organisers for the inaugural Formula One race in Singapore have picked a company based in Italy as the lighting contractor.

The decision came after two lighting tests were conducted in July and September at the Paul Ricard High Tech Test Track in Le Castellet, France.

Organisers have also got the go-ahead after submitting a proposed system to the Federation Internationale de I'Automobile (FIA) in Paris.

Singapore plans to hold the world's first night race next year and has teamed up with Italy-based Valerio Maioli S.p.a, which specialises in the engineering of lighting and telecommunication system.

Lighting plays an important part in the race and the company said it will use lights to guide the drivers.

The entire track will be fitted with close to 1,500 projectors, placed 4 metres apart.

This makes it almost four times brighter than an average sports stadium.

But the brightness will not be too glaring for the drivers.

This is because the projectors will be erected 10 metres above the course.

The power surge will not result in any power outage or blackout, thanks to the 12 twin-powered generators.

The lights will be brought to Singapore in early January to be tested in a controlled environment.

Contractors will then take approximately two to three months to set up the system, so the lighting system will likely be up in the second quarter of 2008.

Meantime, all eyes will be on the announcement whether Singapore gets the go-ahead to hold the world's first night race.

"It's never happened before so it's very exciting for the world, and everybody's waiting for this night race. For instance, there are 400 reporters going for each grand prix. For Singapore, probably 600 are coming, almost double the number, because of the interest," said Colin Syn, President of Singapore Grand Prix.

The decision on holding the night race will be known early next year.

Personally I don't see what the big deal is - having watched IRL races at night, I haven't witnessed any more accidents than daytime driving. The lighting is surprisingly effective and after the first 5 minutes you don't even notice it apart from the interesting shadows....

Frankly I don't care what time of day the race happens, as long as a race take place.

Sure the drivers will have to adjust but that's all part of testing their skills - we might even get more racing/overtaking <faints>

And as for the pleasing Europe bit I think that's an excuse by Bernie, its all about marketing and creating a spectacle - but then that's what F1 is these days. Maybe it is a gimmick, but so are all street races :) And as has already been pointed out, Bernie's plans are to make F1 less Euro-centric anyway.

Personally I think there are bigger problems in F1 to do with the way it is regulated than worrying about a night race. I just find it hard to get that emotional about it. Nor would I get that upset if someone said let's have a night race in Silverstone. So what?

Its inevitable and once it has happened, most people will go - oh that wasn't so bad.

Maybe Kimi can't just s##t at night, so thus he wants enough lights....

He said his views in 12 words, and we/he likes night races...

He might just take dump in Toyota garage, since he thought it was red anyway!

Don't worry, their chief designer got there first.
