Monaco: The Race

Recommended Posts

So was this the most boring race in F1/GP history ?!

Nope, but you have to have some interest in McLarens internal fight to enjoy it. Was the only real battle out there.

It wasn't my intention to expose her like this :naughty:

Just to be clear, PDLR was indeed commentating for Spanish TV. He was doing that sporadically (every 5 laps or so) and not continuously, as he was at the same time doing work for McLaren. Now, nowbody really knows what it is he does for McLaren during the races, but his commentary is very insightfull. And he benefits from having access to the team's strategy during the races...

Anyway, dominating drive by Alonso who I think seemed to be playing with Hamilton. Whenever he needed it, i.e. ahead of each stop, he extended the lead by an additional 4 to 5 seconds to make sure he stayed ahead. Also Hamilton seemed to be driving much closer to the limit throughout the race.

And regarding team orders, Alonso was 14 seconds behind Hamilton when Hamilton stoped for the second time, he needed to gain another 10 on Alonso to have even a chance to come out ahead of him and there is no way that was going to happen... So the safe bet was to call him in somewhat earlier, call it a day and setlle for an excellent one-two...

Excellent drive by Hamilton too. His time will come one day.

Elgo, you get PDLR as a commentator? Lucky you!

The highlight of latinamerican comments came when one of the commentators (our own version of MW  ) said something like "running in Monaco is like chasing a girl with a chastity belt, you can get on her tail, smell her ( ) but you never get in".

Don't ask me what those guys smoke...

Ese Tano...ese Tano...I couldnt believe it too!

Hi Quiet...good race for Fisi! :clap3:

Jajaja! Bienvenido, Amigo!

Indeed! But we won't know the truth until Montreal, if he can get a good position and defend it there, then it will mean the Renaults are really fighting back.

Probably not in the whole F1/GP History but definatly this season... On the Speed Chaneel feed, there was not even 1 on track overtaking in the whole race, not even One... The retirements were also quiet, i.e. did not get safety cars out, so for me it was a very boring race, irrespective of who win(i would say so even if Ferrari and Mclaren switched places)

Thats got to be the most boring race I have ever seen.

Its pretty sad when some of us avid fans won't even stay up to watch the race.

Bernie don't worry about getting rid of Albert Park and Silverstone GET RID OF MONACO  !!!!!!!

"HAMILTON learns the RON DENNIS way"

5/27/2007 5:49:50 PM ADT (GMT -3)

[Print This Article] [E-mail Article To A Friend]

McLaren insist Lewis Hamilton is free to race for the world title even though they imposed team orders to stop him fighting for victory in Monaco.

Fernando Alonso led Hamilton to a one-two and team boss Ron Dennis said he had prevented his drivers from racing after their first pit stops.

"We will never favour one driver over another; we never have," Dennis said.

But Dennis admitted he "virtually had to decide in advance" which one of the drivers would win in Monaco.

Hamilton said: "It is something I have to live with. I've number two on my car and I am the number two driver."

Dennis said Alonso was "on a radically different strategy" from Hamilton to cover for the potential deployment of the safety car, which has happened in four of the last five races at Monaco following an accident.

He added that had the safety car intervened, Hamilton would have won.

There will be places where they will be free to race, but this is not one of them

Ron Dennis

McLaren boss

McLaren were able to control the race from the pits because they had a huge advantage over their nearest rival, Ferrari, whose driver Felipe Massa was more than a minute behind in third place.

But that will not prevent claims that the team intervened to prevent Hamilton taking his maiden victory.

"I'm sure everybody feels - and a lot of people will feel it in England - that there is favouritism or some penalisation that is given to either Lewis or Fernando," Dennis said.

"We are scrupulously fair at all times in how we run this Grand Prix team.

"This circuit has to be addressed in a team way, and that is why we have won 14 races here.

"I don't like to slow drivers down, to be frustrated or see these things happen.

It is something I have to live with - I've number two on my car and I am the number two driver

Lewis Hamilton

"But because I am an absolute racer, it is the way you have to win the Monaco Grand Prix, which is what we have done."

Alonso and Hamilton are now level on 38 points at the head of the championship, which the Spaniard leads by virtue of his two wins.

"Lewis has an equal opportunity to win the world championship," said Dennis.

"I have been monstrously criticised in the past for not favouring a driver and frittering away the opportunity of a world title.

"But we will never favour one driver over another, no matter who it is. We never have and we never will.

"There will be places where they will be free to race, but this is not one of them because one driver pushing another will induce a mistake, and then you've a car out.

"Everybody would then say 'what an idiot the team principal of McLaren is for allowing his cars to compete to a level where one of them is in the barrier'.

Alonso and Hamilton were prevented from racing in Monaco

"It's not the right way to go."

Hamilton had qualified second with a heavier fuel load than Alonso, and it appears that they continued to race each other despite being told to back off by the team.

McLaren subsequently controlled when their drivers made their stops.

Hamilton said: "I caught him up, but it's extremely difficult to overtake here in Monaco, and he was obviously on a similar pace to me.

"I was told to take it easy, so there was no point pressuring him into a mistake, and then if he had made a mistake to crash into him, so it was best to finish one-two.

"To be honest I pushed as much as I could to the end. I didn't give up, so I didn't really take too much notice and kept going.

"But at the end of the day I'm a rookie, and finishing second in what is my first Monaco Grand Prix, I really can't complain.

"Coming into the season I expected to be number two driver. I'm a rookie, it's my first season, and I'm just pleased to be here.

"I'm still living the dream. I've been on the podium in my first five Grands Prix, and I hope to continue with that."

No much to add to this, if you were doubting there was any team orders here you have it, that's why alonso were shinning today the way he did it, he was set to win this race by RD, and for thoses who believed that LH was called earlier to prevent him from loosing his second place, I read here that the team was preventing Alonso to loose his position to Lewis, just to confirm, this is what they said

"He added that had the safety car intervened, Hamilton would have won."

We didn't get that bit in the Speed tv coverage...(or i missed it)

Getting rid of Monaco would be a nail in the coffin of F1.

Yeah it would be... Even though i found the race quite boring, it is i think the only race to be done in a fancy place which was funded by a smoking company....

They are terrible ads, your not missing out AJ :D

But i don't get how come they have them there, isn't F1 family friendly???

Those ads always appear after midnight no matter what on. I suppose they figure that young kids arnt going to be watching the formula 1 when its on past midnight. I wish the networks didnt play them at all as they are the worst kind of ads you could possibly imagine. They keep trying to make you ring some number for $2 a minute and download the Paris Hilton sex tape to your mobile phone.

All the European races go past midnight. For races that arnt on before midnight we tend to get car parts ads and insurance ads for your motorcycle.

Yeah it should be AJ your right.

I would not be impressed if I was recording the race to sit down and watch it at a normal hour with a youngster and these ads are on, it's just another example of poor form from our television station unfortunately.

One another note I must voice my disapproval for the performance of Ralf Schumacher over the Monaco weekend. The man deserves to be sitting on the sidelines with the way he has been driving over the last couple of rounds. And all this from a guy who without a joke thinks he is one of the top three drivers in the sport. Get a grip Ralf.
