Briatore Confirms Alonso Offer

Renault boss Flavio Briatore has confirmed that he has invited Fernando Alonso to rejoin the team whenever he leaves McLaren.

Alonso's former team have been at the forefront of rumours about the world champion's future, especially as Renault have not yet announced their 2008 driver line-up.

Briatore admitted that he had told Alonso there would be a place available for him at Renault if he wanted it.

"I told Fernando that the moment he is free from McLaren, we would be pleased to have him back," Briatore was quoted as saying by Gazzetta dello Sport. "It would be stupid to deny that."

Last weekend Ferrari team principal Jean Todt dismissed rumours that Alonso could join Ferrari in place of Felipe Massa next season, and Briatore agreed that Ferrari were right to keep the Brazilian and Kimi Raikkonen.

He said pairing Alonso with Raikkonen would potentially create the same driver hierarchy problems that have caused tension at McLaren this year.

"First of all, after this experience at McLaren, Alonso will think 27 times before facing new adventures in other teams, and besides Todt already has two good drivers," said Briatore.

"And lastly I wonder: would it be positive to team up Alonso and Raikkonen? The time when you could have two strong drivers in the team are over. Now it's important that the roles, number one and two, are clear, otherwise you risk to destabilise the team."

Briatore believes Alonso would not have joined McLaren if he had known that he would have to fight on equal terms with Lewis Hamilton.

"If before signing the contract they told Fernando: 'come with us but you won't have any sort of advantage', he wouldn't have gone," the Renault boss suggested.

"If you hire a world champion, then you must give him the number one status."

The Italian admitted that Renault's relationship with Alonso had not always been harmonious but felt the team had always successfully smoothed any issues.

"There had been tensions also when he was at Renault, but we got over them because we were always transparent with him," Briatore said.

He also joked about McLaren boss Ron Dennis's record with Latin drivers.

"Dennis has often reiterated to be very good at managing drivers, especially the Latin ones," said Briatore.

"With the problems he's had with (Ayrton) Senna, (Juan Pablo) Montoya and Alonso, he must have lost the instructions manual... Maybe he did not study Latin at school..."

Some interesting quotes can be made from the article, bar the latter, lol.

Just a little fuel to the fire. I wouldn't expect him to retreat anywhere else (Toyota, :naughty: ) and haven't from the beginning. On Renault, he in my opinion should never have left and to my belief it was the lack or more so, speculation toward the commitment Renault had toward its F1 program that originally drove him out and $. Someone can correct that, but that was my understanding.

However, I would welcome the move and hope Renault can climb back to the top.

I agree with this, it would be great fun to have 3/4 drivers from different teams going for the championship. As much fun as it has been watching them have some great battles but in the end they were told to back off sometimes for the good of the team.

Can you imagine a title fight with Hamilton/ mclaren, Alonso/Renault and Kimi/ Ferrari maybe with a BMW or one of the others mixed in.......

Yep.. intersting comments from a guy who once opposed unequal driver status and politics used by one of his rival teams. Ask me who is the biggest hippocrate in F1, I answer its Flavio. Anyways no high profile men have been spotted wearing bikini standing right next to his topless girlfriend in a public beach, other than Flavio.

Good old Briatore! Sly and cunning. I wonder how will those comments about "number one" and "number two" drivers will be taken at Renault. I don't think those would make Heikki or Nelsinho happy.

And the bit about the latin drivers was fun :D

Anyways, Briatore is a manipulative b#####d, so he might get away with all this.

From my side, I would be happy to see Alonso back at Renault

Didn't Alonso say he had been unable to contact Flavio for several months, so went to McLaren> I thought this was amongst his reasons for leaving?

Prediction:

Alonso back to Renault (with Piquet)

Kovalainen to McLaren

I like that prediction, I doubt Piquet would impress as much as Heikki.

We will see...

I want Nando, and Heikki, and Nelsinho, and Liuzzi, and Trulli, and Lewis for Renault 2008. Is that asking too much? McLaren can keep De La Rosa, and Fisi. Ferrari can have Massa and Sakamoto. STR can have Vettel and Tost's mother and Kimi can have a Sh#t.

He'll stay. Something inside of him will make him push harder to prove he can beat Lewis in the same team. Fernando is too intense and competitive to quit like this.

If Fernando departs, I expect Rosberg in a McLaren. However, Sir Frank Williams seems very strong minded toward the contract situation., rightly so. Other than Rosberg its up in the air.

I would prefer to see Alonso land at Ferrari. This would lead to Jean Todt's exit from the sport (a good thing) and would provide me with hours of amusement watching the Tifosi choke on their own bile. Good times.
