Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton apologises to the team for his costly mistake in Bahrain, which saw him receive a five-second penalty

Have your say on Lewis Hamilton's race-costing five-second penalty in the Bahrain GP.

The Mercedes driver was punished for slowing down Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo as the pair approached the pitlane when the Safety Car was deployed for a crash involving Lance Stroll and Carlos Sainz.

Hamilton knew that he would be 'stacked' behind team-mate Valtteri Bottas after the Finn entered the pitlane first.

"There was not a lot of point in backing up Ricciardo," reflected Sky F1's Martin Brundle. "He had to stack so was going to be compromised and that's exactly why the regulation is there."

Hamilton admitted he had to take the blame for his error.

"The pitlane was my fault and apologies to the team. I tried my hardest to catch up but it was a long way to go. I gave it everything I could," he said.

"Losing points for the team is definitely painful but it is what it is."

The stewards described Hamilton's driving as 'erratic', noting that the Mercedes had slowed to 57kmh before increasing to 75kmh at the pitlane entrance.
