McLaren find it impossible to fix aerodynamic issues without wind tunnel

McLaren's woes continued yesterday as both cars failed to make it into Q2. Alonso finished 16th, just 0.027s away from going through, whilst Stoffel Vandoorne was down in 18th. The team boss went on to admit they have aerodynamic issues which can’t be replicated in the wind tunnel.

Just yesterday it was revealed by engineers that McLaren are handing out Freddos as things are becoming desperate in the garage. Today, Zak Brown admitted to one of their problems with the cars.

“We have identified the areas in which we have a problem or problems,” said Zak Brown on an interview on PlanetF1. “It’s in aerodynamics, it’s something that I‘m not going to give much more than what I’m ready to say.

“It’s something that doesn’t show up in the wind tunnel. Therefore we can’t try and solve it in the wind tunnel because we can’t replicate the issues or issues in the wind tunnel.”

Without this wind tunnel fix, McLaren are forced into trying to solve the issues whilst in the garage on race weekends. Let’s hope there’s plenty of Freddos on offer!

“Unfortunately we’re having to test and experiment at the race track. So while most other teams are now on their development path and their base programme is working for them we’re having to identify and work to solve these issues,” added Brown.

It really doesn’t look as if the tough times are coming to close for McLaren anytime soon.
