Sebastian Vettel threw away a race win after pushing too hard according to former Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg. Vettel crashed out of his home grand prix whilst leading as the expected rain began to fall heavier after the first pit stop phase.

Speaking after the race to Sky F1, Rosberg commented on the crash saying that Vettel should not have been driving as hard as he was when he made his mistake.

“Such a big one – unbelievable!” he said. “He threw it away.

“Yes, the conditions were difficult, we know that, and they are horrible as a driver, because it’s so tough.

“But he still had a gap to the guys behind, he could have just taken out a little bit more, gone a little bit slower and taken it a bit more easy, and he just chucked it into the wall. It’s so bad.”

Whilst it was brought up that the conditions at the Sachskurve would have been difficult in the conditions, Rosberg had little sympathy saying that Vettel should have been more cautious in the conditions.

“But you know the Sachskurve, that’s the one corner where there is no margin for error.

“So in that corner you’re going to leave even more in reserve, and he didn’t. He went over the edge.”

The result means that Vettel has fallen to second in the championship once again, behind Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton with a 17-point gap to the leader.
