Fernando Alonso told his team McLaren that they called him in "way too early" for intermediate tyres during yesterday's race.

McLaren driver Fernando Alonso is very critical of his team's timing to make the switch to intermediate tyres during the race yesterday.

Several drivers were called into the pits when the light rain hit Hockenheim, including the Spaniard.

Alonso warned his team that the tyres would be "destroyed in the dry parts" whilst having the tyres changed.

Not long after, the Spaniard said on the team radio that his tyres were ruined and it had stopped raining.

This meant the 36-year-old had to come back into the pits and this cost him position and he didn't achieve a points finish.

The rain later returned to the track and Alonso told McLaren he wanted to stay out on slicks.

Alonso asked his team before the end of the race if they wanted him to finish the race, he was then told to come back into the pits and retire.

"They told me to retire the car and come slow," Alonso told RaceFans.net.

"Probably they saw something on the data.

"We bet on the rain, we changed to intermediate tyres when it was still dry, and we killed the tyres on the dry track. It was a gamble race and at the end we didn't score points but happy anyway."
