Antonio Giovinazzi has emerged as an outside contender for a race seat at Sauber for 2019. Rumours that Charles Leclerc will be leaving for Ferrari next season means a seat is available at the team and there is no shortage of names currently linked with the team.

Speaking to media during the German Grand Prix weekend, Vasseur didn't dismiss rumours that the Italian was in the hunt for a race seat with the team for next season.

"We will discuss the issue with Ferrari and then make a decision," he said.

"It's important for Alfa Romeo that we achieve good results with two drivers who are best suited for our future."

Giovinazzi himself was able to drive for the team for the first time this season, and said afterwards that he was already thinking about next year and the possibility of a race seat.

"It was nice to finally be back in the car, but everything felt normal.

"I know the team well now, since I did my first two races with them in 2017. Since then, Sauber has grown as a team so it would be silly to say I don't want to race in Formula One with them in 2019."

Not only has Giovinazzi been linked with the race seat but Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen reportedly is looking at extending his F1 career further and is interested in going back to the team he started his F1 career with back in 2001.
