New Sauber technical director Simone Resta is happy with the team's progress in 2018, but is aiming to make a big leap forwards next season, as that will be the first full season under his tenure.

The Italian, who was brought in from Ferrari only months ago, has been tasked to transform Sauber from a team who merely makes up the numbers to a legit midfield contender, and maybe more. Resta spoke about his plans for next season, saying that the main focus is there already as he'll have more to say about the team then.

"The progress Sauber have made in 2018 is very palpable," Resta told FormulaPassion.

"It's proof that the team can be competitive and that there's a strong foundation there.

"The team is growing in all kinds of ways and the technical side is decent too."

Resta already said he's planning on expanding the team by 30%, meaning he'll hire over a hundred more people for the Swiss team. Morale is high at the team, that much is clear.

"I've been hired to make the difference in 2019, but the current progress will make an excellent bridge," he continued.

"The car has a great foundation.

"Because of the regulation changes in aerodynamics we'll lose certain 'advantages', but the other parts of the car will be the same.

"I'm convinced we'll get the best out of the car, but we have much to improve on until that time."
