Alonso best of the rest: "Small win for us"

Fernando Alonso has managed to finished seventh in the Singapore Grand Prix, beating all other midfield cars too it, which is why the Spaniard calls the result a "small win."

Alonso started in 11th, giving him the luxury to start on the compound he wanted (hence the nickname for 11th 'mini-pole'). He did so on ultra-softs rather than hyper-softs, like everyone in front of him. He made quick work of getting himself in the points, overtaking both Nico Hülkenberg and the crashed Esteban Ocon.

He then out-lasted everyone on the track as he was on the harder compound and found himself in P7, a place he wouldn't let go of for the rest of the race. He might have been a minute behind Daniel Ricciardo in P6, but it's a very good result for the typically struggling McLaren.

“Really happy with seventh," Alonso told RaceFans.

"Normally something happens in front of us, but today all top six cars finished the race so seventh is a small win for us.

“We executed the race to perfection today - good strategy, good tyre selection and good points.

“We maximised the tyre advantage, starting on the ultra-softs and then on the softs.

“I think the car was behaving very good and we are seventh, behind the top six, so a small win for us and a lot of points for the team and happy for that.

"Eventually we were the fastest car on track at some point, so that makes me happy at this difficult circuit.”

Considering it's McLaren's best result since the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the fourth Grand Prix of the season, it's definitely a good result for the Woking-based team.
