Ricciardo calls his 2018 season "the weirdest ever"

Daniel Ricciardo has labelled his 2018 season as the "weirdest ever." From the outside, it has been full of surprises. From a shock win in China to a bombshell of an announcement to move to Renault, it's been a rollercoaster. The Australian looks desperate to close his Red Bull career in the good books but is looking out of favour on track.

"It's been the weirdest season I've had racing," he told Red Bull's website.

"Winning two of the first six races is probably the strongest start I've ever had to an F1 season. After Monaco, I was thinking the season looked very promising and that we might even be with an outside chance of fighting for the title."

The 29-year-old has looked fairly tame over his Red Bull departure. He's been at the team since 2014 but involved with Toro Rosso awhile earlier. He expects himself to get emotional about his departure in Abu Dhabi.

"It feels mostly real – but honestly, I think when the chequered flag drops in Abu Dhabi, and I take off the Red Bull overalls for the last time, that's when it's going to hit me," he said.

"It's not so much the 'moving to Renault' part, as it is the 'closing the book on this part of my career' bit. From an emotional point of view, that's when it's going to hit me.

"I've been wearing a Red Bull helmet for over a decade now. It's been a fun journey and we're certainly not splitting on bad terms. I'm ready for something new."

He's now behind his team-mate Max Verstappen in the championship. Since his announcement during the summer break, it's looked like this in the garage as well. What do you think? Is Ricciardo out favoured?
