Williams deputy chief Claire Williams believes George Russell could be a "galvanising force" for her team in 2019.

Williams have had a dismal season this campaign and their deputy chief believes that the addition of Mercedes junior driver Russell, could be a determining factor in the British team relocating their successful days.

It was confirmed just last week that Russell would be driving for the team next season, to become the third British driver in F1 for next season, alongside Lewis Hamilton and new McLaren man, Lando Norris.

Russell looks as if he's taking the place of Lance Stroll, who is almost certainly moving to Force India, but the second seat at Williams remains there for the taking.

Claire explained to Sky Sports how the signing of Russell is a big statement from her team as they look to promote talent rather than drivers with extra financial interests.

"This doesn't enhance our racing budget, this was a decision purely based on the talent we know George has," Williams revealed. "This is what this team needs, and this is a message of our intent.

"We need someone who we can build this team around. We need a galvanising force, and George is going to be that for us. We wanted someone who would be with us for a number of years and who the team can get behind. That was big factor in our decision-making."
