Lewis Hamilton's babysitter has revealed that he was not living in a 'slum.'

In a speech given at the BBC Sports Personality of The Year award ceremony Hamilton referred to the area he was brought up as being a 'slum.'

However, in an interview with the Daily Mail, Hamilton's babysitter, Mr Harris, has revealed that life was not as bad as the world champion made out. They said that the future Formula One star was "always happy and smiling" while growing up in the Hertfordshire town which he described as a slum.

Mr Harris, Hamilton's babysitter, remembers looking after a young Lewis, "He was good as gold to look after and I can never remember him crying. He wasn't a fussy boy either and he'd eat anything you put in front of him and always seemed happy."

One Twitter user wrote: 'Lewis Hamilton said Stevenage is a slum - unbelievable, but then I suppose it is compared to Monaco!!'

In his speech, Hamilton quickly corrected himself and said, "Well, not the slums, but to get out of somewhere and do something."

The British racer finished 2nd in the competition losing out to winner Geraint Thomas.
