Carlos Sainz says he is hoping to continue on improving with McLaren in 2019. Sainz has endured a difficult start to the new season, with various incidents denying him so far.

The Spaniard is yet to score points with his new team however showed a glimpse of pace in Bahrain until contact with Max Verstappen compromised his race.

At the first round, Sainz was put out of the race by a power unit issue while in China it was another case of early race contact changing the course of his afternoon, this time Daniil Kvyat making contact with both McLaren cars.

Ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Sainz says he is still optimistic about his and the team's chances of having a good race.

“Last year I had a great race in Baku finishing fifth,” he said.

“My ambition is always to improve, at every track, every season, so hopefully we'll have a clean race and can perform strongly. It’s been a frustrating start to the championship, with too much going on out of my control, but that is also part of racing.

“I'm determined to keep pushing no matter what and remain patient. Hard work, positive attitude and dedication always pay off.”
