Carlos Sainz is concerned about the future of the Spanish Grand Prix
Carlos Sainz admits he is worried about the future of the Spanish Grand Prix. The race in Barcelona doesn't have a guaranteed slot on the 2020 Formula 1 calendar.
Rumours suggest the Circuit de Catalunya might be replaced by a Dutch Grand Prix. The only Spanish driver left on the grid following Fernando Alonso's departure gave his thoughts on the future status of the Spanish Grand Prix.
“Obviously for me would be a big loss in the calendar. But as far as I know negotiations are still ongoing and nothing has been confirmed. So from here just wishing that all the institutions are going to do their job, they're going to agree on something," Sainz said.
“I think it’s in the benefit of Barcelona, of Spain, of Formula 1, I think the Spanish Grand Prix has a lot of history in Formula 1. I think this track has a lot of history in Formula 1 and it would be a big shame to lose it. So hopefully they can agree on something, maybe not next year because it’s too late, but hopefully agree something on the future.”
If Formula 1 fails to agree on a deal in Barcelona, the sport might look elsewhere in Spain. Another potential venue in Spain would be Jerez. Formula 1 hasn't visited Jerez since the early '90s. Sainz offered his thoughts on this.
“This city, this track, deserves to be in Formula 1. If you could add Jerez then even better because I have two. And if you don’t keep Barcelona I wouldn’t mind having Jerez. So that’s pretty much my order of priority if you ask me now," he said.
