Kimi Raikkonen says that any rule changes Formula 1 introduces in 2021 will not influence him over whether to continue in the sport or retire.

The Finn surprised many with his move from Ferrari to Alfa Romeo Racing for 2019, on a two-year deal to partner Antonio Giovinazzi at the team formerly known as Sauber.

The 2007 world champion took part in his 300th race in F1 in Monaco but could be set to continue beyond his current contract with the Alfa Romeo team.

Speaking to media ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix, Raikkonen said that any decision he made about his future in F1 would not be dictated by the rule changes.

“No, no. Because in the end you see, we make a big rule change, you never know,” Raikkonen said.

“Generally, the big teams are still there, because they have the research to do a lot of different things and figure out the best way to do it.

“Maybe it would be nice that if everything got much closer, for the sport, not just for the drivers, but for the sport.

“Obviously I have a contract for next year, and after that, we’ll see how things go and if I’m interested. If not…”
