Sebastian Vettel was left fuming after a controversial five-second time penalty robbed him of victory at Formula 1’s Canadian Grand Prix.

On Lap 48, Vettel, who had controlled proceedings throughout, made a mistake and ran wide at Turn 3 under pressure from Lewis Hamilton.

Vettel’s Canadian GP F1 team radio outburst in full

Sebastian Vettel was left fuming after a controversial five-second time penalty robbed him of victory at Formula 1’s Canadian Grand Prix.

On Lap 48, Vettel, who had controlled proceedings throughout, made a mistake and ran wide at Turn 3 under pressure from Lewis Hamilton.

Having cut the grass and lost control of his SF90, Vettel re-joined and shut the door on Hamilton as he attempted to make a move for the lead.

The incident was investigated by the Montreal stewards, who opted to give Vettel a five-second time penalty.

The German went on to take the chequered flag in first place, but with Hamilton finishing less than two seconds behind, the reigning world champion was classified the winner.

Here is how the incident played out over Vettel’s team radio…

Ferrari to Vettel: “We have a five-second time penalty for unsafe re-entry. Head down, head down.”

Vettel: “I had nowhere to go. Seriously I had nowhere to go. I didn’t see him.”

Vettel: “When you go through the grass and come back you have amazing grip! Where was I supposed to go? I have grass on my wheels. He decides to go that way, if he got to the inside he got past me.”

Ferrari: “OK, stay focussed. Copy that but stay focussed. 10 laps to go.”

Vettel: “I am focused but they are stealing the race from us!”

Ferrari: “Copy that.”

Post-race:

Vettel: “No, no, no. Not like that. Not like that, no, no, no. Seriously, you need to be an absolute blindman to think that you can move through the grass and then control your car. I was lucky I didn’t hit the wall. Where the hell am I supposed to go? This is a wrong world. I’m telling you, this is not fair. Great crowd. Great race. Grazie Ragazzi.”

Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto: “Seb, you win the race. You win the race on track, that’s more important to us, for the team. We appreciate your effort. Keep your head down and stay calm.”

Vettel: “I’m not staying calm. This is not fair. This is just not fair!”

Ferrari: “Cool the brakes.”

Vettel: “I am cooling the brakes. I’m angry and I think you know why. I have a right to be angry, I don’t care what people say.”
