Robert Kubica has played down the ‘hate’ claims aimed towards Williams teammate George Russell insisting that Polish fans support the Brit with “open arms” as much as they do to himself.

Russell, who has got the better of Kubica at every race apart from two this year, recently said that some of the comments that he gets on social media are ’hate’ from the Pole’s fans.

But Kubica says Russell’s claims “surprised” him as they came before the Verva Street Racing event organised by the Pole’s sponsor PKN Orlen the both of them were set to attend before the Brit backed out with a ‘virus’.

He said to Polish publications Super Express: “I don’t know if he is making a mistake, but I just saw the article and I was a bit surprised that he said it before an event like this.

“I was personally on stage when Polish fans chanted his name, just as they chant mine.

“They really supported him with open arms.”

Several drivers on the grid are quite active on social media but Kubica learned not to look at what people are saying in comments or reviews.

“Apparently George reads posts on his social media, but I don’t do that so I don’t have those problems,” he added.

“A dozen or so years ago I learned not to read reviews.

“I do my job and people have the right to express opinions.

“Formula 1 is so complicated that making judgements is not easy.”
