At one point the idea of a sprint race for qualifying seemed farfetched but the closer we get to a decision being made on the 2020 qualifying method, the more realistic it is looking.

Motorsport.com are reporting that Spa, Sochi and Paul Ricard are being lined up to test the concept which has been tipped for 2020 for a little while now. However, the idea is widely opposed by current drivers and people involved in F1, one example being Helmut Marko describing it as "absurd". Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel have also voiced their opinions against the idea.

"We do support Liberty's aim to modernize Formula 1 and we are open to accommodate experiments," a representative for Sochi told Motorsport.

The FIA needs unanimity from the Formula 1 teams if it wants to try something similar in 2020. According to information from the aforementioned source, 'more than one team' wants to stop the plan for the coming year.

The proposed sprint races will be held in reverse order, based on the World Championship standings at the time of the race.
