McLaren driver Carlos Sainz has said that he would be open to the rules and regulations for aerodynamics to be stricter to help racing become closer with further development being allowed down the line.

The 2021 regulation changes are set to be confirmed Thursday after months of debate and change with some teams expressing their concern over the future lack of freedom for design.

But Sainz believes it is a good move as the tighter rules could potentially make the field closer in 2021 compared to now.

“I’ve been talking to various people, and probably most of them can see that the car at the moment, it’s very tight on regulations, so teams are not going to be able to do much,” Sainz said (quoted by Crash.net).

“At the moment, you talk to some aerodynamicists, and they’re not very happy about it. For me as a driver, I actually really like it, because it means hopefully the field could be tighter in ’21.

“And then as the regulations develop, you could maybe start opening little windows of development for the people to develop.”

Images and digital pictures of what the 2021 car will look like have been released over the past couple of months, including a 50% scale model running in a wind tunnel, but the Spaniard prefers the look of the current cars while stating they won’t be as bad as the 2014 design.

“I like the look of this year’s car. It’s going to be difficult to look as big and as fast as they look now, because they are the fastest ever,” he added.

“At the moment what I’ve seen, they are not the most beautiful ones, but they are not bad.

“It’s not like they are 2014, a really bad looking car.”
