Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso are at opposite ends of their motorsport careers but the prior would welcome a return to F1 for the Spaniard but only if he returns in a competitive car.

Alonso left the pinnacle of motorsport in 2018, leaving McLaren's F1 team to pursue the final piece of the Triple Crown, the Indy 500. Alonso already has already won the Le Mans 24 hour and Monaco Grand Prix.

Alonso has been constantly linked with a return to F1 and he is still working at McLaren in an ambassadorial role. Verstappen admits he'd love to see the two-time World Champion back on the grid but only if he can compete in a good car.

Verstappen said, as quoted by Autosport, that Alonso "should only come back" in the "right circumstances"

"He's a great driver and it would be good to see him if he could come back, but only in a competitive car," said Verstappen.

"Otherwise I think it's just a waste of time for him. But I think he knows that himself."
