Latifi confirms F1 number choice ahead of debut season

Nicholas Latifi has confirmed his permanent number selection ahead of his debut season in Formula 1, choosing #6.

Latifi will make his F1 debut this season with Williams after finishing second in last year’s Formula 2 championship, partnering George Russell at the British team.

The Canadian is the only rookie on the grid for 2020, making him the only driver without an existing permanent number choice.

Latifi confirmed in a short announcement video on social media that he would be using #6 for his permanent number in F1.

“I decided to choose number six,” Latifi said.

“The reason I chose this is because I am from Toronto, and Toronto is known as ‘The Six’, basically because if you’re from there, your area code for your phone number is either 416, or 647.

“It’s a bit silly, but that kind of stuck, so I decided to choose that.”

#6 was last used in F1 by Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg during his world championship-winning team, having carried the number since permanent choices were introduced for the 2014 season.

Other drivers to have raced with #6 in the past include Juan Manuel Fangio, Jim Clark and Kimi Raikkonen.

Latifi will make his F1 debut at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix on March 15 following two three-day winter tests in Barcelona through February, where running will be split between him and Russell in the FW43 car.
