The FIA and Formula 1 have signed the United Nations’ Sports for Climate Action Framework as the sport works towards being net-zero carbon by the year 2030.

To be considered to sign the framework the organisation must meet five criteria, ranging from educating on climate action to reduce their overall climate impact. The FIA and F1's aim to be net-zero carbon helps meet all of the factors and it marks an important moment in the impact of sport on the battle against climate change.

In 2019 plans were unveiled for F1 to be net-zero carbon by 2030 and the sport's Director of Strategy, Yath Gangakumaran, recently insisted the plan really is a "fundamental change".

In a statement, Jean Todt said: "As an international Federation comprising 244 members in 140 countries and the leader in motorsport and mobility development, we are fully committed to global environmental protection."

Chase Carey also voiced his support, adding: “Last year Formula 1 launched its first-ever sustainability strategy recognising the important role that we must play in tackling climate change.

"The actions we will take in the years ahead will reduce our carbon footprint and ensure we are net zero carbon by 2030."
