Mick Schumacher will go into his second Formula 2 season with plenty of expectation on his shoulders. Johnny Herbert believes it is an important season for Schumacher Jr in terms of his F1 future.

Mick Schumacher's debut season in Formula 2 yielded one fastest lap, one victory in Hungary and 12th in the Drivers' Championship. The German is part of the Ferrari Driver Academy and could be targeting an F1 drive for 2021, the year of the regulation changes.

Schumacher will hope to impress in Formula 2 in 2020 as he bids for a future in F1. Johnny Herbert, a teammate of Mick's father, Michael emphasised the importance of this season for Schumacher.

“It’s probably an important season this year,” said Herbert during a press event at Autosport International.

“If you stay there [F2] for too long if you do a four-year stint which has happened a couple of times; for people like [Pastor] Maldonado and [Jolyon] Palmer, it hasn’t really turned into anything particularly brilliant.

“He has to do it, in my eyes, this year.”

One victory in 2019

The 20-year old's sole victory came in Hungary and Herbert analysed this win.

“Nothing that I would class as startling like we saw with Lando [Norris] and George [Russell]. His race win in Hungary was very well controlled, very mature in the way that he was able to look after his tyres and the manner he did but keep the pace he needed to.

"I know it was a reverse grid so he was on pole position, but it was a good win."
