Leclerc on coronavirus: "Safety needs to be the first thing considered"

The coronavirus has already caused problems to the Formula 1 season. The Chinese Grand Prix has been postponed but that might not be the end of the troubles. With the virus now spreading around Europe, other races have now been put in doubt.

In Italy, the problem is growing. A number of Italian cities are going on lockdown. The latest developments have forced Ferrari to close two museums and halt factory tours as they correctly prioritise safety.

More delays?

The first four Grands Prix of the season now have a question mark over them. Aston Martin Red Bull Racing boss Christian Horner says a number of his engineers aren't sure if they can travel to Australia. Meanwhile, flights are getting cancelled in and out of both Bahrain and Vietnam.

Leclerc has confidence those making the decisions will get it right and hopes that safety of people has the highest priority.

"I think the safety of everyone is the most important thing, more than the competition and anything. I'm not sure whether it is safe to race in a country or not, I'll leave it to the FIA and to the teams to find a solution and to understand. Safety needs to be the first thing to take care of," Leclerc said in a press conference which GPblog attended.
