From 2021 onwards there will be a budgetcap in Formula 1. The plan was already several years in concept phase, but now it is really official that from next season there will be a maximum amount that can be spent. For teams like Mercedes and Red Bull Racing the budgetcap seems negative, but according to team boss Christian Horner there are not many drawbacks to the new rule.

In an interview with Motorsport.com Horner tells his expectations about the course of the season with budgetcap. "I always expect the best team to rise to the top. So whatever the rules will be, it is up to us to adapt and make sure we are as strong as possible". So Red Bull's team boss expects the top teams to be at the front with the new rules as well.

More attractive for sponsors

The budgetcap makes it interesting for investors and sponsors to join the sport, Horner also sees. "The plan for the next five years is to make F1 more attractive to investors and sponsors. I also think it will help the smaller teams enormously and hopefully the new technical rules will make racing more exciting".

However, there are also drawbacks to the budgetcap. For example, it seems inevitable that Red Bull will have to lay off team members. "The budgetcap will certainly have an impact on what the team will look like, but we also have other activities. We have a lot of projects in progress at Red Bull Advanced Technologies, because that too is getting bigger and bigger. Our staff is our most important asset, so we will try to keep as many jobs as possible," Horner said.
