Formula One adds two more races to the revised 2020 calendar

Ahead of Styrian Grand Prix, Formula One has announced that two more races have been added to the heavily-revised 2020 F1 calendar with Mugello and Sochi joining the new schedule.

Following the announcement in June confirming the opening eight races of the Formula 1 calendar, the sport has announced new addition to the revised schedule. The original calendar incorporated eight European rounds with two triple-headers and two locations that host two races at consecutive weekends.

The sport has now confirmed that Mugello and Sochi will represent the ninth and tenth round of the modified calendar. The race at Ferrari's own track will take place just a week after the Italian Grand Prix that will be held at Monza. It also means that the Spa, Monza and Mugello races will form the third triple-header on the revised calendar.

Round 9 of the calendar will be called Formula 1 Gran Premio Della Toscana Ferrari 1000 2020 Mugello in order the distinguish the two Italian races from each other and to pay tribute to Ferrari's 1000th race in Formula One. The race is set for September 11-13.

The VTB Russian Grand Prix will be staged on September 25-27, meaning that the Sochi round has retained its original spot on the calendar.

Formula One CEO and Chairman, Chase Carey has expressed his delight that the new schedule has been extended with two more rounds.

“We are delighted to announce Mugello and Sochi will be part of the 2020 calendar and want to thank all our partners for their support in recent weeks. We had great start to our season in Austria last weekend and we are increasingly confident in our plans to race throughout the remainder of 2020. The Russian Grand Prix is a major moment in our season, and we are looking forward to being back in Sochi in September.

"We are equally excited to see Formula 1 race for the first time at Mugello, an occasion that will mark Ferrari’s 1000th Grand Prix. Both races will be a huge boost for fans with more announcements on the next races in our calendar coming in the weeks ahead.”

In a statement released on Friday morning, Formula One has also indicated that its aim has remained to arrange a new schedule that features 15-18 races.
