Ferrari, Renault passed the 2022 crash test

Despite the current restrictions regarding the development of the radically new car for the 2022 season, Scuderia Ferrari and Renault are reported to have passed the front crash test for their brand new machines.

Formula One will face huge technical changes in two years’ time when the entirely new cars are set to make their debut in 2022. The new technical rules were due to be introduced in 2021, but the sport has decided to postpone them by a year until 2022 due to the global Covid-19 pandemic situation.

The postponement of the new regulation also means that teams are currently restricted what they do with their radically-new 2022 machines. Although they are not allowed to work on aerodynamics for 2022, they can make progress on the structural parts of the car.

According to the Italian version of Motorsport.com, Scuderia Ferrari and Renault have already passed the FIA frontal crash test and the nose of the car has obtained the homologation of the governing body.

It is not surprising given that both teams were thought to have started to work on their new car at the end of 2019. That is why a late change to the new Technical Regulation at the start of 2020 ahead of the global crisis massively affected the early work of these two teams, forcing them to make significant changes to their initial design.

Ferrari is working currently on three fronts with the initial design phase of their 2022 car being the most important given that the new rules can be the earliest point when the Scuderia can possibly take on the fight against the field-leading Mercedes.

The Maranello-based team is also working diligently on a new power unit after it was forced to completely rebuild its previous one due to technical directives introduced in the second half of the 2019 F1 season. Despite the severe development restrictions, the team is also trying to find remedy to its draggy car concept that has hindered its chances this year.
