Da Costa reveals struggles after Formula E title win

The new Formula E seasons begins with an opening double-header round in Saudi Arabia on February 26 and 27. Antonio Felix da Costa is the defending champion, and the 29-year-old is hoping that a new approach will help him in his bid to repeat.

Antonio Felix da Costa may have won the Formula E title last season, but the Portuguese driver has revealed he's begun working with a sports psychologist in an attempt to motivate himself. The 29-year-old clinched the 2019/20 championship with two races to spare having won three races for DS Techeetah, which in turn helped them clinch the teams' championship over Nissan e.dams. Despite the success da Costa revealed he lost the motivation to physically prepare for the new campaign when asked if he went through a slump. "That's an interesting question because for the week after, when I got home, I really struggled to get back to doing some exercise and going back to the gym," Da Costa told Autosport. "I just had no [motivation], I didn't want to do it. I was speaking to myself: 'what, win it once and that's it?' "I feel like the king of the world and I don't have to work out anymore or whatever?" Da Costa revealed he's since started working with a sports psychologist in order to best prepare for the 2020/21 campaign. "I've been working a little bit with a mental coach, with a sports psychologist and it's actually healthy to do that and forget about your sport and your duties as a sportsman for a while and enjoy your life and your winnings," da Costa added. "To be honest, [the motivation] came back naturally and I'm right back where we left off."
