Sainz explains biggest concern about F1 sprint race proposal

Ferrari drivers Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc have been giving their take on the idea to hold sprint races in the 2021 Formula 1 season. Whilst they are open to the concept, Sainz has raised a point of concern.

Carlos Sainz has admitted that he is concerned about the possibility of having two race winners during a grand prix weekend if the proposal to hold sprint races goes ahead in 2021. The idea to have sprint races at certain F1 races this season has been discussed by the F1 Commission. Whilst it is an idea that Sainz is open to, the new Ferrari driver is also feeling cautious about how it could affect the value of a victory. "For me personally, I think until we don't try we will never know," Sainz told RacingNews365.com among other media outlets at the Ferrari 2021 launch event. "I personally think it's super important that the main race doesn't lose value. I think it is a bit dangerous that there can be two winners out of a grand prix weekend. We need to make sure that there's only one winner out of the race [weekend where] we're going to do a double race. "But I think if there's a year that we should try it is 2021. With the future ahead, I think it's a good opportunity to try these kind of things and see how it goes." Meanwhile Sainz's new teammate Charles Leclerc is also intrigued by the plans, but like Sainz believes that maintaining the value of the main grand prix win should be a priority. "I think it's quite interesting," Leclerc said of the proposals. "I think it will be tried at least, then we need to understand how all of this will work with the points, etc. I think the most important thing is that the main race remains the main race, and that the value of the main race doesn't go down. "I think this is the main point on my side, but it might be interesting to try it at least, to have shorter races where we can attack more. I will be happy to try it at least."
