Vettel on customer team battle: Aston Martin are allowed to beat Mercedes

Sebastian Vettel has fired back at any sort of suggestion that being a customer team could put Aston Martin at a disadvantage when it comes to trying to beat Mercedes.

Sebastian Vettel insists he is not concerned by the idea that Aston Martin may not be able to beat Mercedes as one of their customer teams. The four-times world champion believes that this sort of view is outdated and that his new team will not suffer any sort of disadvantage as they attempt to battle with the Silver Arrows, despite sharing an engine supply. "I'm not worried about that," Vettel told RacingNews365.com among others when asked about that concern. "I think your fears are old school. The world has moved on. In the past probably you were right, but this past is in some cases still too present, in other cases long time [ago]. "With somebody like Mercedes, I think we can trust that you get a very fair treatment, and if you are faster you will be allowed to beat them. "I think this sort of mindset [of thinking there is a disadvantage] is way out of date as a principal. I see where you're coming from, but I'm not worried. I think if we are very close to Mercedes, that is a very good achievement, so that will be the last thing I'll worry about." Vettel - who joins Aston Martin following six years as a Ferrari driver - is feeling positive about working with Mercedes for the first time. "The Mercedes unit is supposedly the strongest on the grid and it will be my first time with Mercedes in Formula 1," the German explained. "So I'm looking forward to seeing how they work. "We [Aston Martin] are obviously not in charge of the engine and its development, and we can benefit from such strong partners so we can get on with the car and worry about that. I think we have lots of stuff to do on that front."
