Bahrain circuit CEO proposes solution to track limits problem

One of the main talking points from the Bahrain Grand Prix was the issue of track limits. The circuit's CEO has suggested what can be done to resolve this problem in the future.

Alterations could be made to the kerbs at the Bahrain International Circuit to avoid future problems with track limits, the track's CEO has said. One of the key talking points from the opening grand prix of the season was that of track limits after confusion over the rules throughout the weekend. Drivers were warned that they could face penalties if they went beyond the red and white kerb on the outside of turn four during qualifying, but not in the race. However, Lewis Hamilton was told by Mercedes during the race that they had received warnings about the track limits, and in the final laps of the event Max Verstappen was deemed to have ran off the track whilst overtaking Hamilton for the lead, resulting in him having to hand the position back. The controversy means that Sheikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa, the chief executive of the Bahrain circuit, has said that they could consider making alterations. "As a venue, obviously we follow the homologation of the FIA and what they need," Al Khalifa told RacingNews365.com . "You can add an extra kerb in [turn] four, we have the the red and white kerbs. "The idea is obviously to keep them on the track and what can you do so that there’s no advantage going out." Having taken part in the Porsche support races during the race weekend, Al Khalifa is aware of the areas of the track where drivers can run wide. "If I go around BIC there’s certain places where that happens [drivers running wide], there’s certain places where it doesn’t because there’s no advantage. So the idea is to work with the FIA and maybe extending the kerbs a bit like having a double layer or something that could limit that. "As long as there’s no advantage, then people won’t use it."
