Leclerc: Majority of drivers in favour of trying Sprint Qualifying

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc is cautiously optimistic about the introduction of 'Sprint Qualifying', and has said most drivers are in favour of trying out the new format.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc believes the move to introduce 'Sprint Qualifying', a short race to determine the starting order for the Grand Prix, is a favourable step. While yet to be formally confirmed, RacingNews365 understands three such races will be held this year . 'Sprint Qualifying' will be used to determine the grids for the British, Italian and Brazilian Grand Prix, with confirmation possibly coming over the weekend of the Imola race. Leclerc explained that the majority of the drivers are in favour, but is also wary of the shift away from the DNA of the sport after seventy years of a time-based qualifying system. “I think a compromise is needed," Leclerc told Motorsport Italy. " Let's take, for example, the idea of the sprint race: I think it will find the consensus of a large part of the public following Formula 1, and as far as we drivers are concerned, I saw a majority position in favour of doing a test. "We must act with caution, but we must also remember that without the public we are nothing, so taking a step in the direction of the fans every now and then I don't think it's wrong”. Ferrari have been vocal proponents of the qualifying format, with team boss Mattia Binotto also very positive about the move to trial the qualifying races. "Generally speaking, [we're] happy and positive," Binotto told media, including RacingNews365. "I think that's bringing some good change to the sport and hopefully it will be pretty enjoyable."
