Alonso: Alpine have to fight to score points

The two-time Formula 1 world champion is cautious about Alpine's chances at this weekend's Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in Imola after the team failed to score points in the season-opener.

Fernando Alonso has played down Alpine's chances of a good result in Imola following a difficult first race for the team in Bahrain. Alonso was forced to retire from the Bahrain race when a sandwich wrapper caused his brake temperatures to sore. Nevertheless he says he missed the feeling of being in an F1 car and is excited to race at Imola where he was victorious in 2005. "I do like the Imola racetrack and I was glad to see it return to Formula 1 last year," Alonso told the press. "It threw up an exciting race in 2020 and I think some of the changes to the circuit since I raced here over ten years ago has improved the racing. "It’s also different to be in Europe so early in the season, we usually arrive a little later in the year when the continent is going through its summertime. "I think we have to fight to score our first points of the season on Sunday. Let's hope all our bad luck for the season was used up in Bahrain!" "We're still learning lots about the car and I'm expecting that the setup and of course the weather will be very different to what we experienced in Bahrain. "It should be pretty close and a few tenths of a second could make up a number of positions."
