Ricciardo: Midfield battle could be the story of the year

Australian driver Daniel Ricciardo welcomes the challenge of Alpine as the French car brand has entered F1's hotly contested midfield battle.

McLaren F1 pilot Daniel Ricciardo is enjoying the current tussle in Formula 1's midfield with Alpine becoming the latest team to stake their claim as the best of the rest. The Fench team have found a bit of momentum after struggling in the first two races of the season and with Esteban Ocon qualifying fifth for the Spanish Grand Prix, the team have annouced themselves as contenders in F1's midfield battle. Ricciardo though welcomes the challenge. "The more the merrier, it's some good battles, I think this is going to be the story of the year," Ricciardo told members of the media including RacingNews365.com " The first two races it looked like Alpine were a step back from that next midfield battle since last week in Portugal and here they found a step I'm not sure if they've gotten updates the last two weeks, but they're right in the mix now." The Australian was also more upbeat over his own prospects after experiencing two very difficult sessions on Friday. "It was a better day overall," Ricciardo explained. "I'm just happy with the progress today, the car was certainly better. Yesterday, we were a little bit I wouldn't say lost, but we were just, we had a lot of work to do but fortuntelty today was better." The timing of Ricciardo's upwing in fortunes couldn't have been better. The Australian was facing questions over his move to McLaren and solid performance on Sunday would quell the concerns raised by the doubters.
