Sergio Perez worked his way up from eighth to fifth place, good for ten points. The 31-year old driver had a lot of trouble with traffic, so the potential of the RB16B was not fully exploited. This is partly his own fault though, he is honest.

"This is not an easy circuit to overtake and that made it a difficult race," explained Perez on the website of engine supplier Honda. The Mexican veteran was stuck behind Daniel Ricciardo for a long time."We drove a good first lap and made up some positions, but it took me quite a long time to pass Daniel. The McLaren was extremely fast on the straights, so it was really difficult to make a move."

Eventually, Perez passed the McLaren thanks to a clever overtaking move on the outside of the first corner of the Barcelona circuit. "I knew what I had to do, I pushed on and managed to make it happen, but we didn't have many tyres left, so it was difficult," he said.

Perez continues to improve

The difference with teammate Max Verstappen is still big, bigger than he likes. Hopefully, in two weeks in Monaco, things will be a bit better again."I'm getting more and more confident in the car now and every time I'm at the end of a weekend I think, 'I wish the weekend was just starting now'. Also, every track is different so what I learn here will be different to what I need in Monaco but the important thing is that I'm still adapting and hopefully we can be at 100 percent soon," Perez said.
