Rinus Veekay has won the Indy Grand Prix for Ed Carpenter Racing, defeating Dale Coyne Racing's Romain Grosjean after a thrilling mid-race battle. Grosjean, starting the race from pole position for the first time in his IndyCar career, stormed into an early lead as he handled the rolling start perfectly. Grosjean used the softer compound Firestones for the first two stints of the race, with initial pressure coming from Alex Palou and Jack Harvey. With Harvey falling to the wayside with technical issues, Grosjean slowly started to come under pressure from Veekay as the Dutch driver reeled him in after the second stops. Veekay, who had topped the warm-up session on Sunday morning, then pounced on Grosjean as the French driver emerged from the pits on the harder compound. Veekay then relentlessly pulled away over the remaining quarter of the race to come home 8 seconds clear of Grosjean. The pair were in a different league to the rest of the field, with Grosjean trying to keep the pressure on Veekay as rain threatened the closing stages of the race. But Veekay held on to take the win to kick off the Month of May, with Grosjean taking his first IndyCar podium after a stellar weekend. It's also Grosjean's first podium since finishing third at the 2015 Belgian Grand Prix for Lotus, while it's Veekay's first win in IndyCar. The final podium place went to Alex Palou, ten seconds behind Grosjean.
