Daniel Ricciardo is not afraid of a challenge. It would have been an easier choice for the Australian to renew his contract with Red Bull Racing two years ago, but instead, he opted for Renault. He now works for the McLaren team and so it is time to build something new.

Ricciardo drove five full seasons in the service of Red Bull, but the 31-year-old driver decided to pull the door shut after that. Why? He was asked that question prior to the French Grand Prix.

"In a way, I got out of Red Bull because I had a fear of becoming complacent," Ricciardo said in a wide-ranging interview with official F1 website. The Perth-based driver continued. “I was so comfortable with the team and familiar with everyone and I was worried that maybe there’s things I’m missing."

Ricciardo out of his comfort zone

At a time when you trade in your employer for a new race stable after years of loyal service, you go out of your comfort zone. "It requires a bit more work and a bit more energy, but I feel over time – and I’m obviously committed to McLaren for the next few years – it should pay off. Whether it’s six months’ time, 12 months’ time, I should be a more complete driver.”

The first six Grands Prix will take some getting used to for Ricciardo at McLaren. Teammate Lando Norris is the better driver and even managed to put Ricciardo on a lap back this season.
