Ricciardo hoping McLaren find one more step

After a disappointing FP2 that saw him register the 13th fastest time, Daniel Ricciardo is hoping cooler track conditions on Saturday will help him move up the grid in qualifying.

Although Daniel Ricciardo believes McLaren found some pace after a difficult FP1 on Friday, the Australian knows the team have to step up their performance if they are to put in a strong showing in qualifying. Track temperatures were over 60 degrees Celsius, with several drivers and teams struggling in the warm conditions. Ricciardo could only muster the 13th fastest time in FP2, 0.4 seconds back of teammate Lando Norris, and he admits he didn't feel particularly comfortable in the car. "The afternoon was a little better, the morning wasn't particularly good," Ricciardo told RacingNews365.com and other members of the media. "We were struggling quite a lot. I would say that we made a step in the afternoon but in the morning we were two or three steps away, so we definitely still have to find at least one more step overnight if we want to be in a solid position tomorrow. "The track temperature is the big one, that's making it difficult for all of us. It was like 60°C today which is maybe a track temperature record. That is stressing the tyres a lot and making the car not feel particularly good. Nonetheless we still have to find a bit for tomorrow." McLaren brought an upgrade packed to the Hungaroring for this weekend's race, with Ricciardo stating some of them were more data driven. "We will analyse it," Ricciardo added. "I wasn't particularly strong today but as far as upgrades go I did a bit of testing this morning. It was quite hard to tell but I would say that a couple of them were more data driven, so we will see what they say. "Today was the hottest day of the weekend. If it's not wet it is probably going to be cooler the next day or two, so hopefully that allows the track to come to us and put us in the fight.”
