'Red Bull was unbalanced at the Hungaroring, even before Bottas' crash'

It was not Red Bull's weekend. The team saw Max Verstappen just barely make it into the points, while Sergio Perez scored no points after a DNF. This was all thanks to the crash of Valtteri Bottas, who took quite a few other drivers with him.

According to Mark Hughes, this caused Red Bull's already difficult weekend to fall apart. This he says in an article for The Race.

"In the heightened tension of a title fight between Red Bull and Mercedes in the wake of the incident at Silverstone, it was a great shame that Bottas' mistake on a wet track in the opening seconds of the race ruined Red Bull's weekend in Hungary. He braked too late and was denied downforce by Lando Norris' McLaren, which had just passed him in third. He stalled, rammed the McLaren into Max Verstappen and popped himself into Sergio Perez."

Red Bull already had a difficult weekend before Bottas incident

Indeed, Hughes believes that even without Bottas' crash, Red Bull would not have secured the win. Indeed, the whole weekend was already difficult for Verstappen's team.

"But even before that drama had played out, Red Bull looked set for a difficult weekend. The RB16B just wasn't balanced at the Hungaroring and between Friday and Saturday the team had to remove downforce on a circuit that produces a lot of downforce just to get some semblance of a workable balance. Even with the smaller rear wing, the angle of Verstappen's front wing remained unchanged - a confirmation that they simply ran out of angle adjustment with Friday's larger rear wing."

So the sporting revenge that Red Bull and Verstappen were looking for after Silverstone will have to wait a little longer. This must now happen in Belgium and the Netherlands, after the summer break.
