Canadian driver Nicholas Latifi has officially kept his seat at Williams Racing for the 2022 season. The driver who has been in Formula One since the 2020 season had been linked with an exit from the sport, but alongside announcing Alexander Albon as George Russell's replacement for next year, Williams also revealed that Latifi will be staying with the team.

Latifi achieved his first ever points finish in F1 during the Hungarian Grand Prix this year, outscoring teammate Russell until the Belgian Grand Prix. While he has been beaten in every qualifying session as teammates by Russell, Latifi has closed the gap this season, and thei race pace is fairly similar. It was this improvement, as well as his performance around the Hungaroring that no doubt convinced Williams to keep him on.

What has Latifi said?

On the official Williams press release, Latifi revealed his happiness about the news. He said: "I’m excited to be continuing with Williams for another year; partly because of F1's new technical regulations, but also because the team is moving in a more competitive direction with new owners, management and people on the technical side.

"I’ve felt at home here since the day I arrived, and I think I’m in the right place to continue with my positive trajectory. The aim is to continue making little improvements so we can all take advantage of the opportunity we have next year.

"I’m super excited to work with next year’s car and it’s like a fresh start for everybody. I feel privileged to be part of that change."

Latifi will also become teammates with Albon again, after they drove together when they were both in Formula 2.
