This week came the redeeming word that George Russell will drive for Mercedes from 2022 onwards. The rumours had been going around for some time, but with the announcement of Valtteri Bottas at Alfa Romeo, it was only a matter of time.

During the press conference on Thursday prior to the weekend in Monza Russell was asked about his move to Mercedes. The young Briton is, as can be read on Formule1.nl very happy with his seat for next year.

"Of course I am very happy. It's almost unbelievable. I have been with Mercedes for so long. Ever since I drove in the junior classes. I have also been a test driver there, while they are still coaching me even now that I am at Williams. So it feels a bit like coming home."

Russell expects challenge at Mercedes

For where he is clearly the best driver at Williams, he will have to deal with Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes next year.

"Obviously it's not going to be easy at all. He is in my eyes the best ever. I have an exceptionally good position in that coming into Mercedes next year and being able to learn from him. We will have completely new cars in 2022, so it will be important to work well together and to set the bar high. I'm looking forward to it immensely."

The battle currently going on between Max Verstappen and Hamilton may well become a three-way battle next year. Russell will at least attempt to get in on the action from the start.
