Wolff on power unit Hamilton: 'Considering quick engine change'

It was a good first free practice session for Mercedes. Lewis Hamilton won the first session of the weekend and saw Verstappen finish on half a second, of course with less engine power but also with a softer tyre. Toto Wolff was therefore satisfied with FP1.

Speaking to SkySports after the training session, the Austrian said he knows Red Bull haven't let themselves look at their cards just yet.

"I'm quite satisfied. It seems we've only seen one lap with the engines screwed up with Perez quite early in the session. So they have about three-tenths left with the engine. But we have a tyre difference. You know how that goes."

Hamilton can only use two power units left

Which has also increased the Briton's chances of a grid penalty later in the season. He now finds himself in the same situation as rival Verstappen, Wolff also knows.

"We all have problems with the power units, but only with reliability. These power units work hard and it's a question of how they degrade. There is a thought (PU change) for the weekend but we haven't come to a conclusion yet."

More will become clear about the proportions during sprint qualifying, where the line-up for tomorrow's sprint race will be determined.
