In the run-up to the new regulations in 2022, many teams are abandoning the development of their current cars to focus entirely on the new ones. They are doing this in an attempt to catch up because with new regulations every team is starting from scratch. Alfa Romeo is already busy developing for next season, where they also have to take into account a new driver.

Jan Monchaux, technical director of Alfa Romeo, explains in conversation with Motorsport-Total that Valtteri Bottas can be of great value, also with the Finn's knowledge of how things work at Mercedes. "That will definitely help us. Even with preparing for a race weekend, because it's always interesting to have another point of reference."

Alfa Romeo is going to make strides

"We have our processes and we know how to solve problems, but it's clear that teams like Mercedes are better than us in some areas. It will be interesting to see how his input can make us improve. We will definitely benefit from that," Monchaux expects.

According to the technical director, Bottas' knowledge will ensure that Alfa Romeo can start making strides with the new regulations, even after 2022. "A new wind in the factory is always good. My preference is always to have a driver in the forefront, than a driver who normally drives in the rear. In the simulator, he can also help us. Then we can use that in our preparation for a race weekend. We are very happy with him", concludes Alfa Romeo's technical director.
